What Is a Y-Split Harness, and Why Does It Matter?

The single biggest hesitation we hear before someone buys is not about the light. It is about the wiring.

Nobody wants to cut into a loom on a bike they just paid a few thousand dollars for. Nobody wants to find out three weeks later that their dash no longer reads correctly because of something they spliced in at midnight.

So we do not splice anything. Here is how it actually works.

The garden hose explanation

Think of a splitter on a garden hose. You do not cut the hose to add a second sprinkler — you unscrew the end, put a Y-piece in, and screw both back on. Water goes both ways. Take the splitter out and the hose is exactly as it was.

A Y-split harness does the same thing with electricity. You unplug your headlight connector, plug our harness in between, and plug the headlight back into the other side of the Y. The bike's circuit is complete exactly as before — and the third leg of the Y feeds the light.

What this means in practice

  • Nothing gets cut. No wire strippers, no splices, no solder, no tape.
  • Nothing stops working. Your dash, your controls, your stock functions all carry on as they were.
  • It is reversible. Unplug the harness and the bike is back to standard. No trace.
  • No electrical knowledge needed. If you can unplug a connector and plug it back in, you can do this.

Why not just splice it in?

Plenty of lights on the market tell you to. It is cheaper to make a harness with bare wire ends than one with proper connectors.

The problem is that a splice is a permanent decision made with a pair of pliers in a garage. Do it slightly wrong and you get intermittent faults that are miserable to trace. Do it right and you have still voided the tidiness of a factory loom, and undoing it means more cutting.

We build the harness for each bike specifically so it plugs into that bike's connectors. It costs us more. It means we cannot sell one universal harness for everything. But it means the install is genuinely plug and play, and the bike goes back to standard whenever you want.

Which lights use it

Every wired StreetBeam light — the wheelie lights for Sur-Ron LBX, Ultra Bee, Talaria XXX, MX4/MX5, E-Ride Pro and Super73, all our chase lights, and the headlight.

Our battery powered lights and the rechargeable V2 do not need a harness at all, because they never touch the bike's electrical system in the first place. If you want to skip wiring entirely, that comparison is here.

Still nervous about it?

Watch it happen before you buy. Our installation guides show the harness going in on real bikes, and you will see there is nothing to it.

Or message us with your bike and we will walk you through what the connector looks like on your model.
